7th Century CE - Sutton Hoo burial

In around 639 CE a burial took place in England, near the coast east of Cambridge. The Sutton Hoo burial was discovered just prior to WWII on the property of Edith Pretty. Excavation of the mound revealled a treasure trove of relics, believed to have accompanied the burial of an Anglo-Saxon king.

The movie, “The Dig” is an historical drama based on the discovery and excavation at Sutton Hoo.

What does Anglo-Saxon mean? Anglo-Saxons were originally made up of people from 3 European tribes: Angles, Saxons and Jutes (the largest of which were the Angle and Saxon tribes.) Today, when people refer to Anglo-Saxons they are referring to any British people who spoke Old English
