The objectives of scientific expeditions have changed  over time, criss-crossing between political, social and economic influences.

Early 17^th century exploration was focussed on locating and charting hunting grounds and accompanying coastal bases However, by the 19^th century, there began expeditions with purely scientific objectives, with many nations participating and carrying out research in Svalbard.
