800 - 810 CE - King Godfrid of Denmark
At this time Charlemagne ruled a vast empire consisting of much of western and central Europe as the Emperor of the Romans (later to become Holy Roman Emperor).
Godfrid was the first known King of Denmark and probably rose to power as a chieftain who managed to consolidate the collection of chiefdoms and small kingdoms in Denmark at the time.
Both rulers were trying to expand their spheres of influence; as Charlemagne pushed northwards the Danish control over trade routes was threatened. In response Godfrid strengthened the Danevirk, a system of fortifications across the Jutland peninsula.
However, when Godfrid invaded Frisia in 810 CE, Charlemagne mounted a swift and significant response. As it turned out, Godfrid was assassinated by one of his own bodyguards.
