City Impressions: Oslo

City Impressions: Oslo

It was the second time I’d been in Oslo, and I’ve decided that it is my favourite of the Scandinavian capital cities. I have already mentioned our visits to some of the museums and historical sites in my earlier posts. And the harbour with its Striking Opera House is a stunning sight in both winter and summer. But the visit to the Ekeberg sculpture park was one of the highlights of the trip for me. It was quite surreal wandering…

Food!

Food!

It’s time to share some of the food experiences. Where to begin?? Let’s start with the meatballs. Even though I had set myself a goal of trying each country’s specialty meatball dish, this just wasn’t practical! However, we did make a point of visiting a restaurant in Stockholm called, “Meatballs for the People”. We figured that this would be a logical choice!? Meatballs were pretty much all they served. And we were rewarded with a delicious array of this Swedish…

Museums, castles and galleries

Museums, castles and galleries

Everywhere we went I made sure that we received an appropriate dose of history. The museum visits tended to have a focus on the Vikings; after all, I wanted to see first hand some of the relics which I had read about!. However, we also enjoyed other historical sites and collections with their amazing stories. It all started with a visit to the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm. It was here, in The Viking World exhibition, that I saw the…

City Impressions: Copenhagen

City Impressions: Copenhagen

Visiting Copenhagen straight after Stockholm, we found this city a complete contrast. It was busy and vibrant, notwithstanding the cold. And while the weather continued to be changeable, we were able to wander around and explore the many sights. Apart from the fact that Jaegersborggade Street has a seemingly impossible name to pronounce, it was a delightful street which we thought would present some interesting shopping opportunities. And it would have, except that the stores didn’t open until 11am! And…

City Impressions: Stockholm

City Impressions: Stockholm

Stockholm was our first stop after leaving Sydney. And I don’t know what I imagined, but this quiet city was a little unexpected. It was probably just the winder norm, but there were hardly any people in the streets. And the fog created a moody atmosphere, which persisted pretty much throughout the days. Rather than deterring us, it just added to the charm of our meandering around the old town. And to be quite honest, this was just the speed…

First photos from the Northern Lights trip

First photos from the Northern Lights trip

I’m back from my holiday and the first photos which I need to share are of course the Northern lights ones. Yes, I saw the Lights. And where I saw them was pretty extraordinary as well. We were staying at the Muotka Wilderness lodge in Finland, and one evening we went out snow shoeing. We travelled across the deep snow, in a temperature of about minus 10 degrees, shooshing through the eerie night-time forest. We all had head torches, but…

Last minute important stuff!

Last minute important stuff!

This post is a last minute attempt to identify some important things I should know abut the places I am visiting… … especially about the food! I’m presenting the information in short form, as I only have two more sleeps before I leave. Woohoo! And so I don’t have time for finessing. I started by asking myself what each country is famous for, and I selected the following: Then I wanted to check out the food items in country which…

Women warrior vikings – did they exist?

Women warrior vikings – did they exist?

If you’d listened to the historians and archaeologists a couple of decades ago, they would have said that all the Viking warriors were men, and that any references to female Viking warriors was myth. It was accepted that, when more advanced methods of determination were absent or unavailable, that a grave belonged to a man it is contained weapons and to a woman if it contained keys. (Really ?) Then, in 2017 further tests were carried out on a skeleton…

Norse Mythology

Norse Mythology

If there is one thing that I have learnt in my research of Vikings and Norse history, it’s that the line between myth and reality is blurred to such an extent that we might never know which is which in some cases. Norse mythology has come to us through writings which have been dated to around the thirteenth century, notably the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. Both are retellings of original Norse myths in the form of sagas. The…

What’s in a name? ….

What’s in a name? ….

While researching the Viking History timeline I became amused with the names of some of the characters in history. So, I decided to gather them as I went and have presented them altogether below. Note that the dates presented below are estimates, and in some cases the birth date has been left out altogether since there is apparently no reliable source from which this can be determined. Harald Wartooth (690 – 770) was a semi-legendary King of Denmark. His mother…
