Photo Story # 4 – Wildlife

Photo Story # 4 – Wildlife

It was inevitable that we would encounter wildlife on this trip. So, it’s time to share some of my photos.

I’m starting with the moose. And this is because we saw a moose literally the first day of the holiday…. It was in the car park of our hotel! Happily munching away at a tree. The taxi driver was hesitant about getting too close as they are known to be temperamental beasts, who can turn and charge at a moment’s notice. So, the following photo was taken from the comfort of the van.

And there was our visit to the Wildlife Conservation Centre, where we encountered a number of animals, not just moose.

What about this handsome specimen?!…

Then there were the musk oxen. And, as I suspected when I did my research, they are a lot smaller than you think. That’s probably why they put the sign up!

We did manage to see some musk oxen in the wild… just outside of Nome…. and a looooong way away…

Unfortunately, the only bear I saw on the trip was hibernating in a cave in the Conservation Centre. You can just make out its shape, snuggled in the hay….

Below was the view from the bear mountain enclosure. Not bad to wake up to after a long sleep?!

A couple of other wildlife sightings:

An Arctic fox strolling along the train line

And a solitary otter which we encountered on our cruise on the Prince William Sound.
