Norse raiders from Scandinavia attacked the monastery of Lindisfarne, located on the Holy Island in the North Sea, off the east coast of England. They seized valuable religious objects and killed the monks, sending a shockwave through Europe.

This is commonly viewed as the start of the Viking Age.
