Human settlement in Scandinavia began after the end of the last ice age around 12,000 years ago, when previously ice-covered areas became accessible and so human migration exploded. It is now understood that settlers migrated from two areas:
– South West Europe, travelling north along the Norwegian coast
– East from what is now Russia
