Norse settlements declined. The ruins of the Hvalsey Church are the best-preserved of the Norse buildings of this era; the last written record of Norse Greenlanders documents a marriage here in 1408.

It is believed that the Western Settlement was abandoned in mid 14^th century and the Eastern Settlement a 100 years later.
